Up the Mountain is owned and led by Johann Strauss, a qualified South African adventure guide.
Locally, Johann has extensive experience in Table Mountain National Park, Groot Winterhoek Wilderness Area, Du Toitskloof and the stunning Cederberg. He's also completed the popular 5-day Otter Trail in the Eastern Cape, demanding Swellendam Hiking Trail in Marloth Nature Reserve, the Amatola Hiking Trail (South Africa's Toughest 6-Day Hike) and the Fish River Canyon Hiking Trail in Namibia. Abroad, he explored multiple national parks, including Yosemite, Zion, Bryce Canyon, Arches and Grand Canyon in the US and saw the wilder sides of Brazil, Europe, Sri Lanka, Bali and Thailand.
Johann is a Wilderness Level 3 First Aid Responder, trained to handle medical emergencies in remote environments. His guiding approach is calm, informed and safety-first – ensuring that every hike is well-planned, responsibly managed and tailored to the group.
With a deep respect for the mountain and its conditions, Johann places strong emphasis on weather awareness, route knowledge and group readiness. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or an experienced hiker, you’ll be guided with professionalism, confidence and care.
